Nirvana still pleases fans with greatest hits album

By: Darcie Paterson

After reaching a long awaited settlement, Courtney Love and Universal Music finally agreed to release Nirvana's seventh album. The album contains 13 newly-remastered classic songs and one previously unreleased track, You Know You're Right.

Nirvana paved the way for the grunge movement in the early '90s. All that was over on April 8, 1994 when lead singer Kurt Cobain was found dead. They will always be known for their song, Smells Like Teen Spirit, a song that defined a generation and was named the number one video of the '90s by VH1.

The CD jacket contains photos of the band and a commentary written by Rolling Stone's David Fricke in October 2002. The tracks are arranged perfectly to give the listener the full Nirvana experience beginning with You Know You're Right and ending on The Man Who Sold The World. A medley of tracks that showcase how well Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic, and drummer Dave Grohl worked.

You Know You're Right was recorded on January 30, 1994 during Nirvana's final session in the studio together.

This CD should be picked up to complete any Nirvana collection. A CD created by one of rock music's most influential bands.

Sigur Ros create powerful album

By: Darcie Paterson

A strange yet powerful album has just been released by a band virtually unknown to most music listeners. Sigur Ros hail from Iceland and have recorded their third album that is un-named and represented by the symbol, "()."

The interesting thing about this CD is that there are no track listings or liner notes. Sigur Ros tend to have their songs remain untitled for long periods of time and eventually assign some with working titles. The CD comes in a special die-cut slipcase with a die-cut sleeve. The band invites their fans to write or illustrate their interpretations of lead singer, Jon Thor Birgisson's vocals and post them on the website, www.sigur-ros.com.

This album is an intense ride from beginning to end. It only contains eight tracks but runs 70 minutes long with most songs averaging seven to eight minutes. Track four is featured in the movie Vanilla Sky and on the album is followed by 36 seconds of silence. This silence represents the division of the album's two halves, the "sweet" half and the "heavy" half.

Radiohead fans will enjoy the melodic sound and related vocals of Sigur Ros. A sound that will keep you engaged throughout an album exploring the raw side of music.
